Lead Testing
In August of 2008, Congress passed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). For more information about the act, go to http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/cpsia.html.

· ASTM E 1645

ASTM E 1645 - Standard Practice for Preparation of Dried Paint Samples by Hotplate for Subsequent Lead Analysis
- Paint is scraped off of substrate
- Paint is digested in acid and peroxide
- Extraction is analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AA or FAAS)
- Results are reported in parts per million (limit of detection 15 ppm)
CPSC-CH-E1001-08 - Standard Operating Procedure for Determining Total Lead (Pb) in Children’s Metal Products (Including Children’s Metal Jewelry)
- Metal is ground into very small pieces
- Metal is digested in acid
- Extraction is analyzed by Atomic Absorption Spectrometer (AA or FAAS)
- Results are reported in parts per million (limit of detection 15 ppm)
